| January 11, 2010 PROVINCE FUNDS ASSISTED LIVING UNITS FOR ABBOTSFORD SENIORS ABBOTSFORD - The Province is subsidizing 22 assisted living units at Hallmark on the Park to provide Fraser Valley seniors with improved access to affordable housing with integrated support services. "The provincial government is committed to providing housing solutions that make sense for seniors and support their changing care needs," said Michael de Jong, Attorney General and MLA for Abbotsford West. "Seniors who could not otherwise afford assisted living will now have the opportunity because of these provincial subsidies." Hallmark on the Park, located at 3055 Princess St. in Abbotsford, provides 69 one-bedroom units, including 22 assisted living units funded under Independent Living BC (ILBC), 35 private-pay assisted living suites and 12 private-pay independent living units. ILBC is an innovative housing-for-health program for seniors and people with disabilities. Assisted living homes are self-contained units with a 24-hour response system where residents receive personal care services, such as recreational opportunities and assistance with medications, housekeeping, meals and laundry services. Fraser Health is providing personal care and hospitality services for assisted living residents. "The 22 units we added in early 2009 helped fill the need for affordable assisted living in the community of Abbotsford," said Keith McBain, Fraser Heath director for business development and contracts for residential care and assisted living services. "For many seniors, assisted living provides the appropriate amount of care to help them remain as independent and as healthy as possible." Hallmark on the Park is owned and operated by Hallmark of Abbotsford Corporation and is a part of the Hallmark Retirement Communities in Abbotsford. "Our organization strives to provide excellent service and support to meet the physical, emotional, and social needs of those we serve," said Stan Hindmarsh, president of Hallmark of Abbotsford Corporation. "By providing an environment in which seniors can flourish, Hallmark seeks to enhance the quality of life for its residents, their family, and friends." In 2008, the provincial government met its commitment to provide 5,000 net-new residential care beds, assisted living units, supportive housing and home support. The Province has opened 5,896 additional new beds and units across B.C. since 2001. In total, 12,435 new and replacement beds and units have been opened, replacing many that were old and unsuitable. -30- | |
